Wheelthrowing Experience

Wheelthrowing was very difficult in my opinion. Starting off the assignment was easy; however, I could never keep it smooth and under control. It also felt as though we spent more time cleaning up than we did actually spinning (even though that it snot true), but overall it was a very fun experience and I would definitely do this again.

Final Lantern

For this project, I tried to get it to resemble the coil pot I created at the start of this course. They each have similar facial features, and contain the same greenish tone on them, however their background colors are different. This most recent one was rust colored, while the coil pot is a sandy yellow. The lantern (which has freckles similar to the coil pot, however they serve a function on this piece: letting light out) doubles as a wax burner. There is a small dip in the top of the project where wax can be placed, so whenever there is a candle underneath, it melts the wax and creates a nice aroma.

Final Blues Clues Project

This piece, I used the slab method on earlier in the year. I underglazed light blue as seen in my original post about this project, but then I glazed #12, a two toned glaze (beigh/blue) over, resulting in a bubbly darker blue color. The texture of this project is very smooth, but the color isnt super glossy. I am really happy I found a balance between the two. I'm probably going to place coins and other small miscellaneous items such as paperclips in this.

Project Involving Molds

For this project, I used my banana mold to create a small basket. I put holes in the handle (the banana) and the body of the project (the brown part) so that whoever is using it can tie strings through them, and adjust the length of them to be able to hold the basket and swing it around. I like it because the banana is a really bright color. I also used acrylic paint on this project at the end, which made the basket part look a lot more realistic in my opinion.

Large Pottery Project

This project is a large mug. This piece definitely exhibits the progress I have made from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. The craftsmanship of my projects increased heavily, and so did my confidence. A thin layer of glaze was applied, which really made the blue and yellow splotches stand out a bit more. The mug kind of reminds me of something off of Alice in Wonderland, which is one of my favorite movies/stories.

Functional Ceramic Project

This project is a mug holder. I wanted to make something I knew I would actually use in real life. I drink tea at least once a day, and my mugs are always super hot, so I figured I could place the mug in this object and drink through two layers. There are small indentations where your fingers are meant to grip the cup. I really like the color I used to (acrylic) paint the project. I had to paint because I kind of ran out of time glazing, but the texture, although not glossy, is still nice. I love Earthy tones, and this color kind of resembles that of the coil pot I created at the beginning of the year, which makes me happy.

Final Recreational Project (Post Glazing)

This is a boot I recreated from an image I published a few posts prior to this one. I am very proud of the craftsmanship it took to produce this piece. I wanted to use bright colors, and at the time I was relatively limited to only under-glazing because of the kiln; however the harsh fade from color to color kind of balances out that obstacle.

Final Ash Tray Slip Casting

This slip casting was meant to be an ash tray, but I chose to give it to my grandmother as a plate. The yellow and blue glaze on the casting turned out way brighter than I anticipated, however I am very pleased as to how it came out. The glazes I used on each of the zodiac symbols had small beads in them that would explode when heated at very extreme temperatures (the kiln), which resulted in small explosions of color on the designs.

Mug Holder

This project is a functional mug holder. There are small indentions in the sides of it where your fingers are meant to be placed, and a slot in the side where the handle of a cup could possibly fit. I am happy to announce that this, in my opinion, is the best project I have created using the coil method.

Hand Built Ceramic Lantern

My lantern project is meant to be a bit of a spinoff from the coil pot project I made at the beginning of the year. It still needs to be sanded down but I am certainly happy with the way it is turning out.

Lantern Sketch

This is the sketch for my lantern project. It is a similar design to my coil pot.

Banana Basket

This is the original sketch for how I wanted the project to look.

There are two holes in each of the pieces. After they are fired, I will attach them with string in order to make this sculpture an effective container.

Dream Hoard

This project captures the improvements and tasks I wish to accomplish in the year of 2017. It also contains a partial portrait using water colors.
